The manga was only up to about Volume 4 when the anime was produced, hence the seemingly abrupt change after the Female Zero arc. They did try to set things up for a second season but sadly it never happened. :(

I would LOVE if they at least did some sort of OVA or something to bring things to speed, especially now that things have progressed so much in the story. Plus, I can never have too much Soubi in my life. <3
