How do you visualise your characters?
Aug. 26th, 2012 07:36 pmTo make up for that appalling lack of talent, I've always loved writing and music. I mix soundtracks for individual scenes (thankyou Mr Jobs!), writing is done to a curtain of sound and when you hand me a chapter of one of my stories there's a good chance that I can tell you what I was listening to when I wrote it. Sad, but true.
Still, RL handed me a serious case of distractedness last year. I won't call it writers block, because I didn't even have time to TRY to write, so no idea if there was anything there or not. Long story short, to get out of the rut and back into writing I did something that never would have occurred to me before. I got an accout over at DA and started to look at PICTURES!
And in the end, I asked the very talented Leah Keeler (who, by the way is one of the two people responsible for my addiction to Bleach - I thought at first it's a painting technique until I wised up a bit!) to paint me a picture of the main character in my long-running obsession, The Dornost Saga.
I'd never commissioned artwork before and didn't really know what to expect. I gave her a pivotal scene from the novel as guide, and while I probably see things in the painting that only I know are there, what she came up with was amazing. So amazing, in fact, that I'm planning on asking her to do a painting of Macalla's counterpart for me as my birthday present this year. Because, hanging in glorious colour right over my desk, this certainly helps me visualise what I'm writing.
If you love Bleach, check out Leah's gallery on DA.
She's a great Byakuya & Renji fan, but I also like her latest painting of Ukitake
And as for the Lady of Dornost: what do you think?
